When it comes to being on camera, its like you are a deer in headlights. Or- you knew what you wanted to say but then forgot once the camera went on. Or how about, you get very nervous and stumble all over your words? I was once there too. But once I got over "overthinking" and started focusing on my message, that's when things changed for me and I'm going to give you tips on how you can too.
Focus Less On Yourself & More On The Message
When your're so focused on yourself, you tend to try to be more of a "perfectionist" which can throw you off. There is no such thing as perfection, so don't try to be. When you are delivering a message, think about your audience and how what you're saying is going to make a transformation for them. Focus more on educating an informing, rather than how you should say things, that my friend, will cause you to overthink and fumble. Stay cool, keep calm and focus on your message.
Make Sure You Are Knowledgeable About Your Topic
Okay so being nervous is one thing, but being unprepared is another ball game. You need to know your topic in and out, looked over it, studied it and basically a master it. If you can not speak about your topic or teach someone with your eyes closed, you are not fully knowledgeable about your topic. The last thing you want to do is get an opportunity to speak in front of a crowd or be on TV, and you were not fully prepared, and really stumbling over your words because you don't know what you're talking about. Remember, "proper planning prevents a piss poor performance."
Take Your Time And Don't Rush Through Your Message
Whats the rush? Why do you feel the need to talk a thousand miles a minute?? Guess what? YOU DON'T! Take your time, tell your story and make sure it resonates with viewers. People want to hear what you have to say, so you have to be clear and articulate. This goes back to having confidence and being knowledgeable about your message. Why rush, when people are trying to keep up, listen and learn?
Pretend Like Your Talking To Your Best Friend
When I first started doing TV, I would get so nervous because I felt like I had to talk to everyone in the room. The truth is.. you don't. When you have a conversation with your friend, your not being uptight, stuttering over your words or talking very fast. You are just having a relaxed conversation, and either informing or educating. Talk to your bestie, show your personality and get your message across.
Don't Worry About What Others Are Thinking or Who's Watching
The one thing I can say about being on camera, is to not worry about anything or anyone except your message. Depending on your setting, you could be be at a TV studio with producers all around and studio guests, or you could be giving a message with thousands of people in the audience. No matter the circumstance, block out and ignore anything going on around you. Everything and everyone must remain invisible, otherwise you will loose focus which will lower your confidence and cause you to be nervous on camera.
TV reaches larger audiences and we can do that by featuring you on the TV segments we book on a monthly basis. We can also coach you with media training, and how to speak confidently in front of the camera or giving a presentation. At B7, we sent you up for success and give your products the visibility it needs.
